4 Types of Bunk Beds (And Dimensions)

1. Standard Bunk Bed

Standard, classic, or twin bunk bed is designed for twin mattresses and measures 39 x 70-inches. When it comes to the total height of the bunk bed depending on the shape of the frame it can measure up to 63-65 inches in height.
Another name for a standard bunk bed is single-over-single. This type of bunk bed is suitable for two children who are in the age of preschool to elementary school, as that age of children is usually the one to fit in the twin-sized mattresses which were previously designed for children.
On some occasions, depending on the manufacturer, there could be a variation where the bottom bunk bed is perpendicular as opposed to the top bunk. It’s an option some parents consider depending on the size of their bedroom.
Keep in mind that the twin mattresses are smaller compared to the dimensions of the twin frame, which also accounts for the thickness of the wood or metal frame used in manufacturing.
We could make the section for the bunk bed for twin XL mattresses but we decided to keep it here, as these bunk beds can often be varied together in the sense that one bunk is a twin mattress compatible while the other one is compatible with the Twin XL mattress.
All in all, the twin XL mattress is a bit wider compared to the standard twin better at 40 inches, while oftentimes they can boast the same width as the twin mattresses. 2. Triple Bunk Beds
Triple bunk beds rarely appear in the standard bedrooms. That’s because most ceilings in regular houses and apartments in the USA don’t extend above 8 feet. They come in standard twin and twin XL dimensions that were detailed above. However, they usually measure 82 inches in height, which may be too high for some ceilings.
Nevertheless, if this bunk bed is suitable for some camp or a door room with a higher ceiling setting, then triple beds are ideal for multiple roommates living together. Additionally, they are also suitable for homes with a higher ceiling.
3. Loft Beds
Loft beds are suitable for children or teenagers that don’t share the room with anyone but want to save as much space as possible. If you get a loft bed, you can save up additional room for the desk, wardrobe, toys, and other furniture in your room.
The dimensions are the same as with the other beds, although height varies according to your preferences. Loft beds are usually Twin or Twin XL beds with a height of between 63 and 70 inches, depending on where your ceiling is.
4. Combination With Queen And King Beds
These are usually made on-demand, in case of parents sleep with their children in a camp room or some kind of a dorm.
When getting these, you should tell your carpenter of choice that you want to combine a queen or king bed that is sized 60 x 80 and 76 x 80 inches respectively, in combination with twin or twin XL bunk bed above. Of course, the carpenter will add a few extra inches so that the mattress will fit into the bed.
What Mattress Height to Use on Bunk Beds?

You should consider getting a mattress with a height of 6 to 12 inches. Another thing worth considering is the weight of the mattress to ensure that there is no weight capacity limit being broken.
