Let’s agree on one thing, buying a bed can be tasking, challenging. There are so many things to consider out of the box – bed frame, the flooring and slats, the mattress, whether you need a box spring or not, bedding, storage, and much more. If you’re among those people who do need a box spring for their bed, then you will find this article interesting, and hopefully also helpful.

So how tall are box springs? We’ll answer you immediately. Box spring for your bed is usually 9-inches tall, at least for your standard box spring. But, unfortunately, this answer doesn’t answer it all. What if you want to get a box spring for your bed instead of getting “just box spring”?

The height of your full box spring bed depends on certain things. The height of the box spring can be anywhere from 4 to 9 inches. Additionally, there are the bed legs, as well as the size of the mattress, mattress pad, or any additional bedding.

We know how confusing these mattress sizes and heights can be, especially with different types of box springs, as well as mattresses that are used. Lastly, different companies that manufacture the box spring can have their size policy which can be different compared to what you’re expecting to see.

With that in mind, we wrote this article to approach the height of box spring beds to you and make your overall shopping easier. We can’t help you with the choice of mattress for your box spring, as there are box springs that come with a mattress included and those that don’t.

Whatever might be the case, continue reading this article to learn more about the overall height of the box spring and what type of box spring height will work the best for your bed.

Types of Box Spring (And The Height)

Now that we introduced you to the overall theme of the article, it’s worth knowing that every box spring has its type. That type is determined based on the height of the bed. If you’re curious about the type of box spring that you may need, continue reading this section to see what type goes the best for you.

Ultra-low Box Spring

The mattress shopping demands are changing over the years. Decades ago, only standard 9-inches box springs were popular. However, with the popularization of pocketed springs, as well as memory foam mattresses, the standard height for mattresses grew. That way, lower and lower profiles for box springs were introduced.

Now when some mattresses can reach as much as 18-inches in height, with some easily reaching up to 20, it became more natural to introduce ultra-low box springs. The ultra-low box springs measure from 2 to 3 inches in height and are considered the thinnest type of box springs.

The reason we introduce these first is that some people prefer to use them over the entire box spring. Instead, it’s also known as a Bunkie board that is placed under the mattress to lessen the overall height of the bed. You will see them with older beds made out of full wood or platform beds that need reinforcement.

Low Profile Box Spring

A little less radical option for box springs is the lower profile box spring which measures from 4 to 5 inches. Some custom box spring manufacturers can in collaboration with customers design a box spring that will measure up to 6 inches, but generally, most people who have a taller mattress will settle for the box spring that is boasting the lower profile.

What’s important is that the height of the box spring won’t change anything about the overall sleep quality that you have. It will give you the same support that you would have with a 9-inch box spring. Still, it’d reduce the risk of you injuring yourself when falling and is also preferable for shorter people who can’t climb on a huge mattress.

Standard High Profile Box Spring

The standard box spring is the one we talked about at the beginning of the article, which is a total of 9 inches in height. Those were introduced in the past when mattresses were mostly made out of the coil and weren’t inflated memory foam clouds. These box springs were made for mattresses that start from 6 inches up to 12 to 14 inches.

Of course, nothing will be wrong if you place a thicker mattress on this kind of box spring, except that your bed will be much higher and there’s a higher risk of you injuring yourself if you’d accidentally fall off the bed during deep yet restless sleep.

Another thing you should put into consideration is the weight capacity of the box spring in case you’re using a heavier mattress because a box spring headboard can also be quite heavy.

How Tall Is A Box Spring With a Mattress On It?

This is the main question if you’re buying the mattress at the same place as the box spring. Most innerspring mattresses are 8 to 12 inches tall, while memory foam mattresses can be 10 to 14 inches tall. Of course, some exceptions could make the mattress higher or lower, but that’s the standard size.

With that added to the consideration, standard box spring with a mattress will be 16 to 18 inches tall. However, if you’re using a taller memory foam mattress, your total bed could be 20 to 22 inches tall. In case you’re using a super-tall mattress that is 14 to 18 inches tall, you should consider getting a lower profile box spring so that your bed wouldn’t look too tall and give you trouble falling asleep.

Don’t forget to consider the height of your box spring bed based on your conditions. If you have arthritis, or a problem with the lower back, getting a bed that is too high or too low in height could be troublesome.

If you’re shopping for a bed based on your condition, consult your doctor, as well as friends and family that can help you evaluate the right height for you.
