It’s no secret that a lot of people find it more convenient to buy things online from the comfort of their homes. Now that the whole world has pretty much moved online, it became much easier to shop online than a stroll through multiple stores in search of what you find to properly meet your needs. Shopping on Amazon has simplified online shopping even more, with the website sporting anything from books to furniture. However, buying a mattress on Amazon can be a tricky double-edged sword.

Anyone who has ever been on the look for a mattress or any bedding, in particular, knows that such kind of furniture needs to be felt and tested before you’re 100% sure that it fits your needs and can be purchased.

However, for most mattresses, you can’t feel it or try it out if you’re buying it online, especially on Amazon. That’s why it’s important to know how to return a mattress to Amazon if you’re not satisfied.

Another trait of Amazon is that the shop sells mostly affordable mattresses, and when you’re buying something that is not so expensive, you’re risking not getting the product you searched for in the first place.

Most mattresses on Amazon are sub-$500 options, with only a few premium products crossing the $1,000 and $1,500 threshold.

But, when you’re shopping for a mattress, you must know that everyone’s sleeping preferences are different. While some people are back sleepers, some people side sleepers and prefer different firmness levels.

How a mattress feels on you also depends on whether you’re a light or heavier sleeper and whether you want to be hugged and sink into the plushness of the memory foam or have a sensation of sleeping on the mattress, the sensation you feel when you sleep on firm spring mattresses.

In the worst-case scenario, you may not know what your sleep preference is exactly, especially if you spent most of your life sleeping on an uncomfortable bed. That’s when shopping online can become difficult, especially if you already got your mattress delivered to you by Amazon and you’re not satisfied with its performance.

Given that sleeping makes 1/3 of our lives, it’s of utmost importance to ensure that the mattress we sleep on is supportive, balanced, and comfortable for sleep. If it’s not, you should be able to take advantage of the return policy and get a replacement.

In this article, you’ll learn whether you can return your mattress to Amazon if you’re not satisfied. Additionally, we’ll teach you how exactly to return it while adhering to Amazon’s return policy as to not damage the mattress that was shipped out to you. Continue reading to learn more.

Can You Return a Mattress to Amazon?

Yes, you can! However, it’s important to inform yourself about all the bits and pieces of returning the mattress to Amazon. There are different ways to return the mattress but it all depends on what condition your mattress has been in. Depending on the type of mattress you purchased, you can return your mattress to Amazon within 30 days of purchase up to 100 days for some mattresses.

There are multiple ways to return a mattress, one of the options is to go to your Shopping History where all your purchased products will appear, and press “Return or Replace Item” on the mattress you want to return, or visit Amazon’s Return Center. However, you will have to be within the seller’s return policy which can as mentioned above, be up to 100 days.

Alternatively, you can get in touch with the Amazon Seller (for example Linenspa) and explain to them why you want to return your mattress. It’s worth noting that some companies have trial periods that comply with Amazon’s policy so you may have a different time frame under which you can return the mattress if you’re not satisfied.

If the mattress has been unopened the customers can return it for 30 to 100 days. However, if you have unpackaged your mattress you can still return them within 30 days of purchase. Unboxed, expanded, and full-size mattresses cannot be returned if it’s been past 30 days. Still, Amazon will allow you to get a refund for the mattress, according to its Return Policy, as long as you haven’t additionally damaged it.

The company will still encourage its customers to donate the mattress to the charity if those 30 days expired and you’re unable to return the mattress. More importantly, most charity institutes will accept such mattresses as long as they’re not heavily damaged, especially by the customer’s side (with spills and other stains.)

How to Return Unboxed Mattress

Returning unboxed, unexpanded mattresses is the easiest. If you decided last moment that you want some other option and not the one you opted to purchase, you can return the mattress within 100 days of purchase. You don’t need to do any extra packaging on your side, you only have to contact Amazon’s Returns site and you’ll be able to return the mattress without a hassle.

Additionally, you can contact customer service and arrange all additional things about the return. In most cases, Amazon will take over the returns process, although you can also contact FedEx or UPS and ship it back to the seller. Remember that a lot about mattress returns also depends on the Seller’s return policy and warranty offers.

If you purchased the mattress through Amazon, you need to pick the Heavy-Bulk option for returns when wanting to return your mattress. In this case, a specialty Amazon worker will be dispatched to your house to pick up the mattress.

It’s also worth noting that it can take up to 25 days for Amazon to return the mattress to the seller. Additionally, it may take 2 to 3 more days to determine the damage to the mattress and whether it came defective. After evaluating that the defect is on the seller’s side, Amazon will refund you the money.

It’s also worth noting that returning Amazon’s original mattress brands like Amazon’s basics is easier than returning a mattress with the third-party brand name on it. They are more likely to decline the refund, but still have to adhere to Amazon’s policies.

Editor’s notes: Remember that you can only return the mattress within 100 days of purchase. If you purchased a full-size mattress or larger one, remember that those mattresses are not eligible for returns.

You can only opt for a full refund 30 days within the purchase and have Amazon assist you in disposing of the mattress. You can contact the seller on Amazon individually and see if their return policy allows you to return the mattress even if it’s bigger.

How to Return Mattress to Amazon if It’s Opened and Expanded

Amazon may close their eyes on unboxed mattresses, as long as they weren’t expanded. Expanded mattresses are usually those made out of memory foam, latex, or some other form of foam. Nevertheless, generally speaking, those opened and expanded mattresses can’t be returned to Amazon.

However, if you report a defect and prove to Amazon that it wasn’t on your end (for example, the mattress expanded 10-inches instead of 12-inches as it says in the packaging) you’ll be able to get a refund for it. It’s of utmost importance for you to report the defect within 30 days of purchase and contact Amazon’s customer service politely and patiently so that you can get a refund.

Return to The Seller

As mentioned earlier throughout the article, sellers who sell their products on Amazon have their warranty and returns policy. That’s why, if Amazon won’t return your mattress, your seller might.

Read the warranty and returns policy of the individual seller you bought your mattress from, which can usually be found in the Warranty & Support section of the product page. There you can get information on whether the seller will participate in the return and refunding of your product.

Getting The Refund

If your mattress has been unboxed, expanded or it’s larger than a double bed, you can’t return it, but you can get a refund for it. The customer, support section explains why your mattress is not good enough for you, and why you want to get a refund for it.

You can request a refund for any reason 30 days within purchase. Remember that the 100-day return policy we talked about earlier doesn’t apply if you already unboxed your mattress.

If you don’t want to handle your refund online, you can also make a call to the toll-free number that will schedule an appointment with Amazon’s large items team. Together, you’ll set the date and time appropriate for them to pick up your mattress and dispose of it. There are two ways to do it:

  • You can choose to donate the mattress to the charity if it’s not too damaged
  • Leave it up to Amazon how it’ll get rid of the mattress.

Why You Can’t Return The Mattress & What to Do Then?

If you read down till this point you see that in most instances, returning the mattress, as well as getting a refund is straightforward. In most cases, Amazon will collaborate with you and help you get a refund easily, as long as you didn’t damage the mattress on your own.

Here are the instances under which you won’t be able to get a mattress and get a refund for it.

The Return Timeframe Has Passed

This is the most common reason why people fail to get to return their mattresses. Additionally, they don’t understand the difference between return and refund policies.

In other words, they already spend 100 days of the return policy for twin, twin XL, and double mattresses, or open the mattress package and let it expand. They then think that the refund policy for unpackaged and larger mattresses is the same as with every other mattress, totaling 100 days which is not the case.

What that essentially means that if you unpackaged your mattress you have only 30 days to get a full refund if the mattress has been damaged and make a deal with Amazon of how you will get rid of the mattress, will the company handle the disposal or will you donate the mattress to the third party of some charity institution?

Editor’s notes: In case you exceeded the permitted time, what you can do is get in contact with the original seller. Understandably, Amazon policy applies to the sellers too. However, individual sellers may be able to give you more insights into how you can swap this one for the better.

Additionally, some sellers on Amazon boast more than 100 days of sleep trials, with some brands allowing you to sleep trial your mattress for more than 6 months. If that doesn’t work, you can consider selling your mattress further, unfortunately, likely for the lower amount than you purchased it.

You Damaged the Mattress

Amazon won’t allow or accept your complaint if you’re the one who damaged the mattress. It’s no secret that we all do all sorts of things on our mattresses, from eating, drinking to even polishing our nails or even dyeing our hairs for those extra lazy. In such conditions, staining your mattress is inevitable, and there’s no chance that Amazon will accept your refund request.

Editor’s notes: One of the solutions includes removing the mattress cover (yes, they all come with one) and giving it a proper wash in the washing machine. If the stain is smaller, you’ll be able to tap or spot-clean it.

However, this won’t always work. Washing and cleaning always leave one or more signs of wear as proof that you’ve been cleaning it or washing it, such as visible wear or change in color of the cover. In those situations, Amazon will likely count that as damage too, and decline your refund request.
